How To Lighten Dark Lips: Tips & Advice

how to lighten dark lips

If your lips are naturally dark then you might want to lighten them up a bit to make your lip color go on more effectively. Do you notice that the lip color in the tube just never looks the same on your actual lips? It’s so annoying!

That is because your natural lip color’s undertone changes the way the lipstick looks when you put it on. That can be very frustrating for women. You spy the perfect color on the makeup counter in the store, eagerly take it home to wear out for the night on a hot date, only to have it look completely different on your own face. What a pain! Here is what you can do to make sure that your lip color looks true on your lips.

Apply a Drop Of Foundation

On your bare lips, take a dab of your foundation with a concealer or lip brush and lightly brush a layer of the product over your entire lips. This neutralizes any of your natural lip color to make it more uniform to receive the lip color or lip gloss. It blots out the natural color providing a perfect base for your lip shade. Plus, it will help your lip color lasts longer too.

Concealer Works Too

A concealer works too as long as it’s not too thick. If you need to thin it out a little bit, just combine a tiny pinch of eye cream to make it go on your lips smoother. This will also help your lipstick stay on for longer during the day.

Prevent Your Lips From Getting Darker

This is important to remember everyday, no matter what time of year it is. Your lips can be affected by the sun. Prevent them from getting darker by using a SPF based lip product everyday of at least a 15. An SPF 30 is even better if you can find it. Slick a layer of the protective lip product on over or under your lipstick or gloss. As long as it’s on your lips it will prevent the sun from damaging your lips further, making them even darker.

Lemon Might Help

They say that lemon has brightening properties to it, so by using it on your lips it can help to lighten them naturally. Just mix a teaspoon of fresh lemon juice with a teaspoon of raw sugar to make your own lip scrub. Not only does this get rid of all the flakiness that can build up on your lips, but it will also help to lighten a bit when left on as a mask. Leave on for 10 minutes, and then rinse off.
